Vasant Panchami: The Festival of Spring

Vasant Panchanmi, the auspicious festival that marks the arrival of spring, will be observed on 23rd January 2026, on the fifth day of the waxing moon or Shukla Paksha, of the month of Magha.
The King of All Seasons
According to the Vedic scriptures, the year is divided into six seasons (ritus) among which Vasant Ritu, the spring season, is regarded as the king of all seasons. During this season, the natural world reflects harmony, balance, and beauty. The weather during this time is neither too cold nor too hot, making it pleasant and comfortable for all living beings. It is also the season when flowers bloom, trees regain freshness, and nature appears vibrant and lively.
The importance of Vasant Panchami is further established by Lord Krishna Himself. In the Bhagavad Gita (10.35), Krishna declares, “Of seasons I am flower-bearing spring.” This statement highlights the special position of spring as a manifestation of the Lord’s opulence. With many ceremonies commemorating Krishna’s pastimes, spring is regarded as the most joyful season.
Beginning of the Holi Celebrations in Vrindavana
In Vrindavan, Vasant Panchami holds special significance, as it marks the beginning of the forty-day Holi festival. From this day onward, celebrations gradually unfold in remembrance of the loving pastimes of Sri Sri Radha and Krishna. The Deities are adorned in beautiful yellow garments, symbolizing the joy and freshness of spring.
The Divine Vasant Rasa-lila at Govardhan
Vasant Panchami is also associated with the celebrated Vasant Rasa, which took place near Chandra Sarovar at Govardhan, where Lord Krishna enjoyed loving exchanges with His devotees during the spring season. In the course of this divine dance, Lord Krishna noticed that Srimati Radharani’s flower anklets had loosened, causing the gentle sound to fade. On the pretext of adjusting them, the Supreme Lord gracefully bent down and placed His head at Her lotus feet.
This deeply touching pastime reveals Krishna’s heart, that although He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, His greatest joy lies in lovingly serving His devotees. Such pastimes are remembered during spring celebrations, reminding devotees that devotion and selfless service are most dear to the Lord.
